In the summer of 2016, my wife, Barbara, and I flung ourselves from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to work at the American University of Central Asia: I as an Assistant Professor teaching First Year Seminar and Creative Writing, and Barbara as Coordinator of Academic Advising, Internships, and Career Services. We stayed for two years, and among the intensity of teaching, of learning how to navigate what to us was an often uncanny landscape, traveling (Kiev! Lviv! Budapest! Helsinki!
